Gahmar

Gahmar is a very large village in India, located near the Ganges river in the Ghazipur district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The village is 38 km from Ghazipur. Shree Kushum Dev Rao founded the village on Sakara dih in 1530 AD)

Overview

Gahmar is made up of 23 "Pattis" or Sections, each of which is like a small village itself. The population is around 75,000, which is greater than Khora and Loni Dehat in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh.

 Soldiers village

It is sometimes called the Soldiers Village since many soldiers come from the village who have served in the British Indian Army and have taken part in the Second World War to the Great Kargil War. There is a saying in the region that "You can find 3 soldiers and 2 rifles from each home. One of the most famous soldiers belonging to the village is Capt. Ramrup Singh who fought during the First World War and won a gallantry award from the British Government.
The village is dominated by Sikarwara part of Suryavanshi Rajpoot (Sikar-Rajasthan), Rajputs.
The village has the river Ganges on its northern side and the railway station on the southern side. On the east the village has a canal and is connected with Bara village. On the western side is the Holy Shrine of Maa Kamakhya Devi, locally called Kamachcha MaI
In Reotipur village a Bhagawati Temple is situated. Maa Kamakhya Dham in Gahmar is very famous place across India, situated at the western end of Gahmar village. Maa Kamakhya Devi is "Kul Devi" of Sikarwar Bansh or Sakarwar Bansh of Rajput Caste. Maa Kamakhya Devi temple is situated in the Gadaipur village. In the compound of the temple there are many shops of Prasad, a swimming pool, a forest park. a garden, a rest hall and room, an office,and a few shops for refeshment(North Indian and Chinese).
It is a belief that Maa Kamakhya goes in the battlefield to save her children. Despite the high number of soldiers from the village there were no casualties in the wars of 1965, 1969, 1971 and Kargil. Villagers believe that, due to the powers of the Goddess Kamakhya, no bullet of the enemy touches the bodies of soldiers.
The first Hindi spy literature was written by Mr Gopal Ram Gahmari. Gopal Ram Gahmari was a member of the Bhartendu Mandal. Gopal Ram Gahmari's Kothi's ruins is situated near Gahmar Railway Station. Mr Bhola Ram Gahmari was a Bhojpuri poet (kabi) from the village.

It comes under Ghazipur Sadar (Loksabha) Parliamentary Constituency and Zamaniya Legislative Assembly, and under the Zamania Tehsil, Bhadaura Block and Gahmar Police Station.
